Summary of The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc. History
The Makers Studio Central Coast Inc. started in April 2016 leasing premises at the back of the Lions Club Community Hall at East Gosford. With a membership of 13 and $107 in the bank, a printing press and various other art studio materials The Makers began. As a small collection of artists & artisans we wanted to provide a creative hub that encouraged members and the community to access specialized equipment to make, learn and connect.
Our first task was to find ways to generate revenue to pay for things like rent, electricity and public liability. With this in mind, the Committee began gathering information about Master Printmakers & Artists who would run workshops for members and the community.
Opportunities arose when visiting international printmakers Alexis Neale & Dagmar Dyck from New Zealand were invited to launch our first major workshops in July 2016. This was a booming success with one participant travelling from New Zealand to attend. Since this time The Makers have hosted a range of major workshops facilitated by well known artists such as Gary Shinfield, Dianne Fogwell, Michael Kempson, Seraphina Martin, Sarah Ross-Thompson, Avril Makula, G.W.Bot to name a few.
Our membership has continued to grow and resulted in a number of annual exhibitions at both small and large galleries across the Central Coast. Members are skilled in printmaking, textile & fibre arts, mixed media and much more. Several members have been accepted as finalists in the annual Gosford Art Prize while others have successfully exhibited in galleries located in Sydney, Newcastle and rural NSW.
The Makers Studio has also made inroads into the international printmaking arena with the introduction of an International Print Exchange with entries from all over the globe. This is an annual event encouraging printmakers to edition small prints based on a nominated theme. At the conclusion of the annual exchange entrants will receive nine unique prints to add to their collection.
The program throughout the year is designed to encourage members and community participants from beginner to advanced practitioner level in a broad range of artistic practices. Open access days are also run to enable members to use the well equipped studio facilities as well as a Lino Club now in its third year.
The Makers Studio has come a long way from its humble beginnings generating sufficient revenue to maintain and update equipment and it can now confidently provide creative opportunities that engage the Central Coast community in a broad range of creative pursuits.
